One of the most known psychologists is Sigmund Freud. In a survey I conducted, approximately 87 percent of the psychology students said they were most aware of Freud. Sigmund Freud is a neurologist and is mostly known for his work in psychoanalytic theory and consciousness versus unconsciousness. His work allowed us to understand personality, developmental stages, and defense mechanisms.
Freud’s methods helped psychologist understand the basics of people’s lives which then led to understanding development stages, brain consciousness, and defense mechanisms. His research in developmental stages included psycho-sexual stages which looks at the periods that children encounter as they face society and their own sexual urges (Feldmen 453). Freud deepens his research on brain consciousness as he looks at ego, superego, and id which help the brain distinguish reality. His research on defense mechanisms expands on the unconscious strategies people use to reduce anxiety. This is important to look at because we need to know where these thoughts come from.
