Dr. St. James (a Millikin University professor) says
If you really wanted to be a psychologist you need a PhD degree. That could take up to 6-8 years beyond an undergraduate degree in which you are not making enough money. Economically, it’s not a particularly good decision. On the other hand, those that go through it then can have careers in research and teaching and so on. Those are very satisfactory careers that actually accomplish something. So I think it is worth the trade off, but have to realize they are delaying economic benefits.
Dr. Scircle (another Millikin University professor) says
“I think if people love it then it is wise…I love psychology…I think it’s wise if you know it’s going to get you to your end goal…”
Personally, I suppose that if people want to go into psychology it is important for them to do their own research. One must first attend an accredited school with a wonderful psychology program. They must then research which career mostly interest them. There are a plethora of careers in psychology; some are more saturated than other, but it is important to research which is more appealing to that person. Lastly, one must learn how to be patient. A PhD degree will not come over night and students must learn how to be patient and keep striving for their goal.
